If you have a device built into your system, you can enable supported hardware protection. Add the folder to folder security to protect files from rootkits and malware. Make sure your applications and web activities are secure with your Microsoft account and automatic sample transmission.

In this review we look at 10 powerful features of Microsoft Defender and Windows 10 to keep your computer safe.

Automatic scanning to remove hidden malware

The default settings for scanning for viruses in Windows Security use Quick Scan. Only the current system folders where threats are likely to prevail are scanned. It’s like a frontline virus bodyguard for your PC.

Sometimes a thorough analysis is needed to prevent malware in the ROM or BIOS. This can only be done by performing an offline scan of Microsoft Defender. Some viruses are difficult to remove when your system is running. Thanks to modern stream definitions, the standard antivirus on Windows 10 can find and remove them.

Your laptop or PC will then reboot and it will take about 15 to 30 minutes.

User scanning of a file or folder

Another simple feature of Microsoft Defender is that it can scan any file or folder on your Windows 10 system.

Navigate to any folder on your computer. Then right-click on a file to be scanned with Microsoft Defender. This is a quick way to scan a single file that may contain a virus.

This security feature is useful for scanning suspicious files or folders downloaded from the Internet that have unreliable sources. This method is more convenient than a full scan.

Full hard disk analysis

This method is more thorough than ordinary quick scans. This should happen less often because it takes more time.

But don’t worry! Microsoft Defender automatically reduces CPU, RAM, and disk usage depending on the application and program usage in Windows 10. This type of scan is performed at full power only when the system is in standby.

At the end of the day, you can rest assured that all files on your hard drive or system have been scanned. Depending on the number of partitions and files, scanning may take several hours.

Dynamic locking for increased protection

Once you are logged in to your Windows 10 laptop or PC with a Microsoft account, you have additional security rights.

You can use various connection options to lock your computer if it is not there. For your convenience, you can also use Windows Hello or a PIN code to login to your account.

A more reliable method is to use a dynamic lock for your system. When you pair a Bluetooth device with Windows 10, your system automatically locks when you are away. This makes it easy to fully protect your files and system.

No keys need to be pressed to lock the computer. If you forget or are busy with your work, the system locks your computer dynamically and without your intervention.

Adding protection to folders to prevent ransom software attacks

On the right side of the Virus and Threat Protection section of Windows Security, you will find the Ransom Software Protection section at the bottom.

You must click on Manage Protection against Ransom Software to access this setting. This allows controlled access to the files. It’s simple: Ransom software can block access to the most important files on your system.

Typically, your OneDrive is added for this protection. By default, documents, images, videos, music and favorites are included in this analysis in Windows 10. You can move other folders under this protection by clicking Protected Folders and Add Protected Folder.

Sometimes third party applications can be blocked by this setting. In this case, you can allow the application to bypass the managed folder to access normal operation. All Microsoft Store applications run securely, even if this option is enabled.

Real-time protection with cloud update

Microsoft Defender on Windows 10 is capable of blocking all online threats, website and application malware. This is due to recent definition updates and real-time protection.

Another feature of Windows security is the so-called cloud protection. In Windows 7, it is called Microsoft Active Protection Service (MAPS). This function is enabled by default when you install Windows 10.

You can see it on the right when you click on the Protect against viruses and threats button.

However, some applications or programs can disable them to their own advantage.  It is therefore best to check the following setting.

Virus and threat protection settings > Manage settings

Then make sure that the security is activated or not with the delivery in the cloud.

The following options are available in the latest version of Windows 10 Update 20H2.

  1. Real-time protection
  2. Automatic sample transfer
  3. Security against unauthorized access
  4. Exceptions

Some are available with earlier versions, e.g. B. with the 1909 update and the May 2020 update.

Browser application and reputation management

There are many applications in the Microsoft Store that also have premium versions. Although many of these applications are developed by Microsoft, some are installed by developers who are not affiliated with Microsoft. In this case, we don’t know if it’s safe to use.

To ensure that the applications, files and websites on your system are protected from malicious and unauthorized activity, you can enable reputation-based protection settings. The following options are available when you click on this label.

  1. Application and file check
  2. SmartScreen for Microsoft Edge
  3. Possible blocking of unwanted requests
  4. Smartphone screen for Microsoft Store applications

This setting protects you from malicious websites, applications and downloads. Blocks applications and downloads if you think it’s phishing. Files that are not recognized on the Internet are checked for file delivery and cloud protection and blocked if necessary.

Configuring firewall settings and using rules

First make sure that the Microsoft Defender firewall is enabled for domains, private networks and public networks. This blocks unwanted threats when you log in and out of Windows 10.

Another function is to define rules for your applications and programs.

Click the Allow Application Through Firewall button. It shows all applications currently allowed by the firewall for private and public networks. You can change the settings to allow multiple additional requests or deactivate existing requests.

It is best not to change the default settings as most of the store’s applications use the web for their operation.

Click Advanced Settings to set the rules for incoming and outgoing connections between your network and the Internet. This will unlock the Windows Defender Firewall with advanced security in the latest update from October 2020.

If you click on Incoming lines, you will see all the applications and programs that enable internal communication from the Internet to the private or public network. If you are using a typical home or business network, you can set up rules for this type of network. The other network parameters can be deactivated because they have little influence.

The same applies to the production rules. You can prevent access to files, applications, downloads, programs on your Windows 10 laptop to communicate with services in the outside world. If you want to fine-tune the access, you can also disable the ports.

Protection with System Equipment

Companies and offices that use laptop and network equipment supplies for their employees. If they think the company’s information is sensitive, they can implement hardware locks on the Windows 10 laptop.

If your system is equipped with the necessary hardware, you can activate device security. This type of protection and security is only available if the hardware supports it.

Parental controls for family safety in Windows 10

Windows Security also provides the tools you need to protect your team members. Although you cannot set up Parental Controls in Windows 10, you can use this feature to access it in the web interface or in an Android or iOS application.

You can view your child’s device activity, set screen time limits for applications and games, add extra time to the device, add money to your child’s account for purchases from Microsoft Store, set usage checks and content limits for Xbox One, and more.
