How to add two-factor authentication to your social media accounts

With the increasing number of hacker attacks on personal accounts, many Internet services now offer the ability to implement two-factor authentication, or 2FA as it is sometimes called. With two-factor authentication, the hacker, even if he has your password, needs your phone or security key to access your account.

Authentication factors are categories of credentials used to confirm that someone or something is who or what they claim to be. There are three categories: 1) Knowledge factors are login data that the user knows, usually a username and password. 2) Possession factors are what the user owns, usually a mobile phone. 3) Mismatch factors are things the user is, usually biometric features such as a fingerprint or iris pattern. Strong authentication means that the system uses two or more of these options.

In May 2019, Google announced a one-year study in partnership with the University of New York and the University of California, San Diego. The trio found that two-factor SMS authentication blocked 96% of mass phishing attacks and 76% of targeted attacks that tried to hack into your Google Account.

If you want to add two-factor authentication to your social media accounts, we recommend that you download the authentication application to your smartphone, for example B. Google Authenticator or Duo Mobile. Sending a text message to your smartphone for two-factor authentication is always more secure than using a separate password, but if a hacker accesses your physical device, they can still access your accounts.

Learn how to use these applications (available free for iOS and Android smartphones) to implement two-factor authentication on social networks.

Facebook

To enable or manage two-factor authentication

  1. Go to your security and access settings.
  2. Scroll down to use two-factor authentication and click Edit.
  3. Select the security method you want to add and follow the on-screen instructions.

If you are using an authentication application, the method you want to select is the login details of the third-party authentication application.

From now on, every time you log into Facebook you will be asked for a six-digit code, which you can find by opening the authentication application.

Immediate locking

To set the two-factor authentication with Snapchat, follow these steps

  1. In My Profile, click ⚙️ to open the Settings section.
  2. Press the two-factor authentication.
  3. Touch Next to complete the configuration!

Then choose to use the authentication application. As with Facebook, after implementing two-factor authentication, your authentication application generates a unique code that works for a short period of time each time you sign in to Snapchat.

Instagram

The process at Instagram is a little more complicated. Setting up a two-factor authentication :

  1. To access your profile, press the button or the picture of your profile in the lower right corner.
  2. Press the upper right corner and then Settings.
  3. Press Security, then scroll down and click Two Factor Authentication.
  4. Press next to Authentication prompt, and then press Manual Setup. If you can’t see the cup, press Go.
  5. Click Copy Key with Instagram Key and paste it into your authentication application.
    • Take a look at this: It is important to copy the code from the key to the clipboard, take a screenshot or save it in any other way, as you will no longer have access to the code once the installation is complete.
  6. Once your Instagram account is linked to your authentication request, copy the 6-digit code created by your authentication request.
  7. Go back to the Instagram application, click Next and enter the 6-digit code to complete the process on this device.

Twittering

To add your two-factor authentication to Twitter :

  1. In the top menu, press the Profile icon and then Settings and Privacy.
  2. Touch Account, then Security.
  3. Click on Two-Factor Authentication.
  4. Then select : Authentication request.

It is also worth noting that this technology does not require an Internet connection or telephone service, which means you can connect at any time using two-factor authentication. In fact, the time counter used in the application that gives you the current code is synchronized with the current time on your phone. In this way, client and server remain synchronized as long as the system time remains the same.

However, there are a few things you should know when using authentication applications. The application needs to be updated with the latest software version. If you change phones, log into your mobile provider’s account in the web browser and click Change Phone to update the data and scan the application’s barcode on the new phone. Indeed, the phone itself is directly linked to the authentication process and only one device can be connected at a time.
