Screencast-O-Matic is a free video recording software available for Windows, MacOS, Linux, iOS and Android. Its characteristics and wide market coverage make it one of the most popular. The software can be used free of charge on desktop platforms, but you can subscribe to a paid Premier plan for registration and synchronization on your mobile phone.

The software supports free 1080p recording and you can record your screen and webcam at the same time. Moreover, you do not need any parameters to run the program if you use the free version. It installs an extension on Google Chrome that allows you to record any screen.

Screencastify is another screen capture application for Windows, MacOS, Linux and Chrome OS. Just like Screencast-O-Matic it installs an extension in the Google Chrome browser. The extension cable takes up about 61 MB disk space and displays a small box after clicking. The box comes with the options below.

6. Audio system

The program records the video on Google Drive. So, if you don’t have a Google account, whether you create one or not, the program won’t work.

When you click the Save to desktop button, you will be asked whether you want to save a particular screen or the entire desktop. On a certain screen, the program saves a window, even if it is minimized. The only problem with this function is that it is not possible to record the microphone and system sound on a specific screen.

When the recording is finished, a new tab with video and details opens. As the video is stored online, there are many ways to share it. You can share the video:

2. Connection (optional)
3. YouTube
4. Website via an integrated code
5. Send to Gmail
6. Generation and distribution of QR code

It is very important to check the length of the video. In both cases, I recorded the desktop screen for 24 seconds. The microphone and computer sound are muted. The video recorded with Screencast-O-Matic took 916 KB, while the Screencastify video took 1.83 MB. This round goes to Screencast-O-Matic.

Storing the set

Recording games requires more power because the computer’s GPU is already occupied, and recording videos also requires GPU power. Anyway, which one of them does the best work, but what about the size of the video?

As far as the game is concerned, the table is turned upside down because the 10-second game video recorded with Screencast-O-Matic took 33.1 MB of memory. For comparison: 10 seconds of video recorded with Screencastify takes up about 15.3 MB of disk space, less than half. Here’s a screenshot of the details. As far as video quality is concerned, I haven’t noticed any difference. Both screens record the software game ready.

Screencast-O-Matic is available in two plans for individuals and two plans for teams. The personalized Deluxe plan that gets you started is almost everything a person needs, unless he or she wants to upload and share videos online. The First Plan contains powerful exchange tools that are ideal for teachers to continue learning with little effort. The Deluxe plan for ten users costs $9.5 per month, while the Premier plan for the team costs $17.5 per month. The team’s plans do not offer any essential features.

The scenography comes with three shots. The first plan costs $49 per year, which allows unlimited registration and a number of other tools, but the second plan also costs $49 per year and offers some additional features. The final plan is the Shipping Plan, which costs $99 per year and allows for some privacy control and integration with Google Classroom for flawless education. In general, I think Screencast-O-Matic is cheaper than Screencastify.

Who is the winner?

In general, I think Screencast-O-Matic is the absolute winner over Screencastify. The only element of screencastify that is better is the watermark. For this bonus, Screencast-O-Matic comes with a powerful editor that has all the features that Screencastify offers, plus you get lots of extra tools in the editor to make your video more informative.
